Blog or website. What works for your business?

your brand new website 1

When you need to find out more about a business, you can almost always find their website online. But more and more companies are also starting blogs.

What’s best for your small business? A blog or a website?

First, let’s define the two types of online tools.

A blog is simply a type of website. Most have multiple posts or articles listed chronologically, with the most recent one on the front page. Most blogs also allow interaction with its readers, via comments.

So all blogs are websites, but not all websites are blogs.

There are some blogs where the front page is static, making them basically the same as traditional websites. That is, there isn’t a chronological list of posts.

So what’s best for you and your business?

I actually have both a blog and a regular website. My website is specifically about my writing business, Theda K. Communications, and it is the home of my portfolio. When I send out cold emails or make cold calls, I always refer the prospective client to my website.

My blog is more for fun, and is way less formal than my website. I have a link to it from my website (and vice versa, actually), but I spend more time marketing it. In effect, my blog is my marketing tool, and hope to lead buyers to my website.

Do you need to have your blog and website separate? You might, if you want to maintain a strictly professional online presence.

If you haven’t yet created your website, complete with your online portfolio. check out Homestead, which is where my website is hosted (yes, this is an affiliate link, so if you choose to use them, please go through my link). They have reasonable prices, and lots of templates to choose from, especially if you’re not ready to make your own website from scratch.

Do you have both a blog and a traditional website? Why or why not?

  1. Theda,
I had a regular Web site for many years and started a blog about 2 1/2 years ago. Until a few months ago, they were separate, but recently I combined them on WordPress. I like having them in one place and having a consistent look.

On the other hand, I don’t use the site to find clients or generate business so I don’t need a more formal, business-like site. I might feel differently if I depended on my Web site for clients.

Thanks for the input. I’m curious to see what others are doing too. For now I have a blog and a website, but I’m considering making my website a static blog instead (so I can use WordPress).

By the way, I LOVE your new theme! Very easy to read. I’m going to change mine ASAP.

Well i have blog on my website as a separate part, which acts like a news section for visitors. Other parts of my site consists of general information and describing products and services that i offer.

Generally i am sure people are make decisions on whether to run website or blog depending of their business and needs.

Well, depends on what kinda work you’re interested in. I mean, if you’re looking for a blogging gig, then you gotta have a blog to show off. If, on the other hand, you’re interested in writing a rambling thesis which would make sleeping pills unnecessary, then you put your website forward. :)

I think that’s kinda what I do. My more boring stuff, like press releases and legal writing, is on my website.

In my cold emails, I refer people to my main website for my portfolio, and tell them that more informal writing samples are on my blog.

  4. Hi, I have already think about this topic, so if you have a blog you can write articles about some new things in you business, and people can leave comments, ans I think it is very important to know opinions of other people, they also can give some good advices onhow to improve your business. Now I have only website, but I am going to start blog soon, I think it will help me a lot.

  9. with the newest wordpress blogs, you almost have all the alternatives of a traditional website. For most businesses a wordpress blog would be enough in my opinion.

I really appreciated the way you had differentiated the blog with the website. In my view both are powerful tools that really work for your business.

  11. hi Theda,
I’ve been responsible for a website for a long time, and now have a new blog. I’d say each has its own advantages and disadvantages. I find the blog to be a bit more work, but much more fun and interactive. If I could only have one, I’d have the blog, but I think it’s best to have both. I wish I’d started blogging a long time ago. Now I’m off to read your next post. :)

I use serendipity blog and there’s a static page add on build in. I’m used to blogging now where I can easily add content whenever. I recently put up some regular html websites but I felt like I still had to update them, so in the end I decided to just blog everything. If I want static pages, I can just easily add that on. I also noticed blogs got indexed on the search engines so much faster.
