Itching to publish a book?
Posted by Theda K. on 31 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Links, Sponsored Post, Writing

Freelance writers often write for businesses or magazines so we can make a living. But deep inside many, and not so far down in quite a few, is the desire to publish their first novel, or even some of their poetry.
It can be scary putting your “babies” out there for the world to see, and it’s heartbreaking if you get rejected. Luckily for you aspiring published authors, there is help available. I recently checked out Greendoor Publishing, a site that can help you get your poetry, fiction publishing, and writing dreams accomplished.
I like what Greendoor Publishing stands for. They believe every writer deserves a chance, and they’re willing to publish, free-of-charge, anything their editors think is worthwhile. The company encourages experimentation in writing, so you don’t have to write the way you think you “should.” Be yourself.
Even better than publishing your work, Greendoor will help your work reach its true potential with their online editing service. You send just 4 pages for a free appraisal, or send in your entire piece for a small fee. Their editors will let you know how much help the piece needs. When you’re ready, let their experienced team enhance your already great writing.
If you need a nudge getting started, perhaps with your personal memoirs, take advantage of their ghost writing service. All you need is a synopsis of your story, and you can begin getting great advice about where to go from there.
Check them out when you get the urge to write the next great novel. Who knows? You may have the next Harry Potter on your hands.

You know, Theda, I’ve done some comprehensive research on publishers for a client of mine. At first, I thought it was just another way for publishers to make some money. But after I contacted a few of them, and heard back from a few writers who had paid for editing services, I found these publishers were really offering value for money. Not only do they give your rough work some much needed polish, but they have some invaluable guidance for what you should do to sell your book.
Even if they can’t pay you big royalties, a bit of money spent for editing with an independant publisher can really help your writing career take off. They have excellent contacts in the publishing world, and if your book has even a little bit of potential, it can really pay off.

Theda,
Do you have personal experience or knowledge about this company? I’m surprised to see so little information on their Web site. It doesn’t appear that they have published anything yet as I don’t see any listing of published work. They don’t give any guidelines on what they want. They don’t even say whether they are a subsidy publisher charging fees, or, if they are traditional publisher, what the royalty rate is. I would be hesitant to submit to a publisher with so little information provided unless I had personal references from someone who had worked with them.
The fact that they offer editing as a separate item seems strange. Usually publishers provide editing as part of the publishing process unless they are subsidy publishers that charge for each item.
Most editors will give a free sample edit–I usually do five pages on a book-length manuscript, and I recommend anyone considering hiring an editor take advantage of the free sample offer.
I’m certainly interested in learning more as I’m always looking for legitimate publishers for clients.
Lillie Ammann’s last blog post..Merry Christmas!
I’ve been working on a cookbook for over a year. I’m not sure whom I’ll be using.
I do agree with Lillie they need more information based on the limited information I’ve seen I would not use them. They haven’t given me any reason to trust them. I think they need to step back and look at themselves as a potential customer would they be willing to use a company that had so little information? It they have published work they need to add the information. I would suggest they change their landing page. There is nothing on there that would make me stay.
I would come up with a different website design there isn’t anything that is keeping me there.
I’m guessing it’s a new company? I’m looking the PR is 0 and the Alexa is over 8,000,000. I checked out resources page it has information, but it’s linking out to other companies I think they should think about supplying their own resources.
The way the website looks as if it were thrown together very quickly. That’s not the impression you want potential customers to have.
I would have waited and added some solid content before I marketed it. Yes, In the beginning it can be challenging for a business to venture out but I honestly think they should do a little more work behind the scenes before they went live. I worked on my business website a while before it was revealed to the online community.
I have always wanted to publish a book too - I have a few children’s books I have wrote but never did anything with.

Hi Lillie and Opal, I agree with your assessments of their website. I don’t have any personal experience with the company, though I do like what they said they stand for. I was reviewing the services they say they provide. I would be interested in trying their free services, and I might send in a synopsis of a story or a few pages of a story, if I’m ever so inclined.
I’m sure the company will take a look at these comments, and hopefully they’ll take them into consideration and make some improvements. I also noticed the lack of fee information, so I wrote the owners and asked before writing the review.
Thanks, as always, for the comments! If you do wind up giving them a try, please let us know how it worked out!

Thanks for dropping by, rawdawgbuffalo. I’ll go check out your blog right away, and visit again soon.
It’s about time I start a book. I’ve been writing forever, but I have never put it all together.
Good luck! I’ve never had the desire to write a book, yet, but at least I now know there are companies out there that might help me out. You can do it!
If I could make a living out of writing I’d love to ! It’s the fear of not being able to support my family that prevents me from pursuing that dream. Hopefully when the kids are older I’ll get more time to write. Thanks for the articles, Dave
I completely understand, Dave. It’s that fear that’s driving me back into the workforce. Good luck to you and your family. Maybe you can write in your spare time and make some side money.
Ohhhh! I’ve been working on a manuscript for a while. This is fantastic news!
I’m not sure whether they’ll like the subject matter - more photography than text - but what a valuable resource to try!

Forrest, do let us know if you try them out. I’m sure a lot of folks would be curious to see if they’re good. Either way, I hope your manuscript gets published soon.
Thanks for dropping by.
I was refused to publish my first book.. After that I didn’t try to publish another but I’m still writing. I just like to write.
If you think your book is good, maybe you should try again. At least you’re still doing what you like, though.
Hi Theda - I think I would be really careful and do a little more research.
I checked out the about us page on that site and it is just one guy.
That wouldn’t be a bad thing in itself, but I clicked on recent works - expecting a list of titles, publications etc and there was just a few poems.
And I know not all editors are writers, but I can’t find anything on there which says who he has worked as an editor for.
Do be careful and do a lot of research.

Hi Catherine,
I definitely agree that anyone who wants to publish something should do a lot of research. Personally, I’m not interested in publishing a book…or even writing one. I just reviewed the website for this company.
Drop by again anytime!
