Comments plugin problem fixed
I just found out that my new spam-blocking plugin wasn’t allowing people to make comments (thanks Lillie, for alerting me)!
If you tried to make a comment and got a weird rejection note, please try again. I welcome your comments. So far I’ve only gotten very niceĀ and constructive comments. You guys are great!
The plugin I had installed which seems to have caused the problem comment is SpamBam (please let me know if there are still any problems).
While you’re at it, I’m trying to get to know StumbleUpon. So if you like a post, please click on the Stumble It link. Feel free to Digg It too (I’ve got to learn what Digg is all about also). Thanks!

I’m glad you found the problem. It’s so frustrating when we try to make something better and end up making it worse.
I have had good success with Akismet for spam. Some people say you need a backup spam program to that, but I’ve had Akismet alone for about six months with good results.
The comment spam has increased tremendously (since I joined the No Follow movement I suspect), but Akismet misses very few. When I checked the last time, Akismet had caught 282 spam comments since I had last checked about 12 hours ago, and there was one spam message in moderation. Akismet has a “recheck” option; when I ran that, it caught the spam. That makes nearly 14,000 spam messages caught since I installed the plug-in.
I used to read through the spam comments to check for legitimate messages that got through. But I found only one real message in the first 8-9,000 messages sent to spam. So I decided it wasn’t worth looking through the junk – some stupid, some vile. I put in my policy if anyone submits a comment that doesn’t appear within a day to let me know in case their message did get caught by mistake, but no one has ever contacted me.
I have found that using Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam combined with Askimet has virtually eliminated any spam.
It works nice with WP 2.2 as well.
I have been using akismet with great results. check it out when you get a chance.
